Why Study Kathak at Shruti’s SOPA?
Kathak is one of eight classical dance forms of India, known for intricate footwork (tatkaar), expressive storytelling (abhinaya), and dynamic spins. At Shruti’s School of Performing Arts, founder Shruti Kafle — a Kathak Visharad graduate from Allahabad University — leads a curriculum that balances technique, discipline, and creative expression. Whether you’re a child discovering Indian classical dance for the first time or an adult returning to training, our Bedford studio provides a supportive, community-driven environment.
Students choose SOPA because we offer small-group attention in a professional studio setting, clear progression from fundamentals to performance readiness, and cultural depth that goes beyond memorizing steps. Our teaching emphasizes understanding naatya, nritya, and nritta — the three pillars of classical Indian dance — so students develop as artists, not just performers of choreography.
- Small-group attention in a professional studio setting
- Clear progression from fundamentals to performance readiness
- Cultural depth — understanding naatya, nritya, and nritta, not just steps
- Flexible formats — in-studio, online, and private coaching
- Performance opportunities at DFW showcases and cultural events
Many families from Bedford, Hurst, and Euless tell us they searched for authentic Kathak instruction before finding our studio. We are proud to be one of the few dedicated classical Indian dance programs in the Mid-Cities corridor.
Kathak Programs for Kids, Teens & Adults
Beginner Kathak Foundations
New students learn posture, basic tatkaar, hand gestures (mudras), and rhythm awareness. No prior experience is required. These classes are ideal for ages 6 and up as well as adult beginners who have always wanted to explore Indian classical dance. We focus on building a strong foundation so every student feels confident before moving to more complex material.
Intermediate & Advanced Training
Continuing students refine laya (tempo), complex footwork patterns, abhinaya, and repertoire pieces. Preparation for examinations and stage performance is available for dedicated students. Advanced training includes work on traditional compositions, improvisation within classical frameworks, and mentorship for students preparing for community showcases and cultural festivals across DFW.
Online Kathak Classes
Live Zoom sessions mirror our in-studio approach with clear breakdowns of steps — ideal for DFW residents who prefer training from home or students outside Texas. Online students receive the same structured curriculum, personalized feedback, and community connection as our in-studio dancers. Read our blog on Tatkaar in Kathak to preview the depth of our teaching.
What You’ll Learn — Nritta, Nritya & Naatya
Kathak training at SOPA follows the classical framework described in the Natya Shastra. Understanding these three elements helps students appreciate why Kathak is both athletic and deeply expressive:
- Nritta — pure rhythmic dance and footwork precision. Explore our blog on Nritta in Kathak and Tatkaar footwork.
- Nritya — expressive movement tied to music and emotion. Read about Nritya in Kathak on our blog.
- Naatya — dramatic storytelling and character portrayal. Learn more in Naatya in Kathak.
Each element builds on the others. Beginners start with nritta fundamentals while gradually introducing nritya expression. As students advance, naatya storytelling becomes a central part of their training, connecting them to centuries of performance tradition.
